Alec Bowman_Clarke is a UK-based writer and director based in Rothesay on the Scottish Isle of Bute. He grew up in Mildenhall, Suffolk, and developed an early interest in music, photography and film before moving into music videos, short-form visual work and narrative filmmaking.
His early screen work included music videos and artist-led visual pieces, particularly for independent musicians, where he developed a practical, self-sufficient approach to writing, directing, shooting and editing. He later moved further into scripted work, making short films rooted in performance, atmosphere and contained dramatic situations.
Bowman_Clarke wrote and directed 'Never Again' (2024), a short film made in and around Rothesay, and later directed Deluded - The Making of 'Far from Nowhere' (2025), a short documentary connected to musician Josienne Clarke. His subsequent screen work includes 'Dog Violet' and 'You Don't Have to Be Mad to Work Here' (2026).
His films often focus on ordinary people placed under strange institutional, emotional or procedural pressure. Across his short films and developing feature work, Bowman_Clarke is interested in systems, language, bureaucracy, performance and the ways people try to keep control when the rules around them begin to shift.
He continues to develop short and feature film projects through his independent filmmaking practice.
